Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Breaches Steam

Heralded as one of the best in the series, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, was first released in 2007, seeing a Mac OS release in 2008 (retail only, at the time), and a Mac App Store release in 2011. Although the game has been available on Steam for Windows, the Mac version has been conspicuously absent.

Until today.

Owners of the Steam version of COD4 should today find it waiting patiently to be installed in their “Mac Games” section of Steam. This makes it the second Call of Duty game to get a Mac version on Steam, with Black Ops released last year, but unfortunately that was not released as a SteamPlay title, meaning owners of the Windows version effectively had to buy it again if they wanted to play on Mac.

Last week saw the mysterious appearance, and subsequent disappearance of XCOM: Enemy Unknown for Mac on Steam, but with this release, the game can be completely installed and played, although Steam is not (yet) listing it as a SteamPlay title on its store page.

Now if only the same thing will happen to Rage, I’ll be very chuffed indeed.

We’ve reached out to Aspyr for comment, and will update if anything else comes to light.
