Introduce Plex to Steam with a Plugin

Reddit user reefab has made a plugin for the Plex Media Center application that will allow you to run Steam in big picture mode from within Plex’s interface, so that you can plug your Mac into the TV and watch games and play tv shows to your heart’s content. Together, these two stellar applications mean that the Mac is now the ultimate gaming system. There, I said it.

Installation

  1. Rename repository folder or duplicate thereof to SteamPlex.bundle
  2. Copy to ~/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Plugins
  3. Launch it from the Application menu item in Plex
  4. Wait a while for Big Picture Mode to launch, it’s kinda slow to get started

Download the plugin, install it, and throw your Xbox out the window. You know it’s time.

UPDATE: You must also be running the Plex Media Server (make sure it’s the latest version) on the same machine as Steam for this to work. All that’s needed now is the ability to control Plex with a gamepad.

As a Plex lover, I will have to give this one a try! Do you find it stable (Steam by itself can be unstable enough….)?

    Thanks for the tip!
